Comparing LineUpr alternatives: browser-based self-service or a flexible event platform?

Which LineUpr alternative is right for your event? Compare Polario and LineUpr in terms of app model, features, hosting, costs and service.

Anyone looking into alternatives to LineUpr should do more than just compare feature lists. Polario and LineUpr both help event organisers to provide programmes, information and interactive features digitally, but they take different approaches. According to its own description, LineUpr deliberately focuses on a web-based, self-service event app that is accessed via a URL. In addition to a web app, Polario also offers a native hub app and a bespoke custom app. Which solution is more suitable therefore depends primarily on access, branding, scope of features, project organisation and event portfolio.

In short: LineUpr is particularly well suited to teams who want to create their own browser-based event app, distribute it without requiring a download, and enhance it with interaction or networking features that are package-dependent. Polario is often a better fit when, in addition to web access, native apps, custom white-labelling, more complex roles and integrations, or personalised project support are required. Both providers state that their data is hosted in Germany.

This comparison is based on publicly available information from both providers. It is not a substitute for a demo or a binding specification of services. Features, package limits and prices are subject to change and should be assessed against the same set of requirements.

What is the fundamental difference between Polario and LineUpr?

The key difference lies not in the agenda or the speakers’ profiles, but in the provision of the event app.

LineUpr describes its product as a web-based event app. Participants open the application via a URL in their browser; there is no need to download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Organisers create and update content via a management dashboard. In its terms and conditions, LineUpr describes the service as a self-service solution, whereby organisers enter their content entirely or predominantly themselves.

Polario offers three distribution models: a web app, the native Polario Hub app and a bespoke custom app with its own store listing. The platform combines event content and interaction with a no-code CMS. Participant registration and check-in can be added as further process modules.

This means that it is not a case of ‘basic’ versus ‘professional’ event apps. Both products can support professional events. The key factor is whether a strictly browser-based, self-service approach is sufficient, or whether additional deployment channels, a dedicated app store presence and project-specific services are required.

Polario und LineUpr im Vergleich nach Bereitstellung, Branding, Projektmodell, Prozessen und Preisen
The biggest difference lies between a browser-based self-service model and a platform comprising a web app, a hub and a custom app.

When is LineUpr the best choice?

LineUpr is particularly worth considering if a team wants to publish an event app independently, without going through the App Store process. The browser-based access can lower the barrier to entry: a link or QR code takes you straight to the app, which can be used on a smartphone, tablet or desktop.

LineUpr tends to be a better fit if:

  • a web app that does not require a download is specifically requested,
  • the event team handles most of the content and design itself,
  • The programme, speakers, venues, sponsors and the latest news form the core,
  • Interaction and networking should be included as part of the chosen package,
  • whether individual events or a predictable annual quota of events should be invoiced,
  • It is important to be able to create and preview content for free before upgrading to a paid version.

According to the features page, LineUpr supports, amongst other things, programmes, line-up profiles, venues, tickets, sponsor profiles, news, surveys, feedback and analytics integrations. Networking, chats, video calls, multilingual support and push notifications are listed on the current pricing page as features included in the Platinum package. Event organisers should therefore not only ask whether a feature is available, but also which package it is included in.

When is Polario the best choice?

Polario is particularly worth considering if organisers are choosing between a web app and a native app, or if they wish to map out multiple event and communication scenarios on a configurable platform. The native hub app enables rapid publication within the existing Polario app. The custom app offers a unique name, its own app icon and a bespoke store listing.

Polario tends to be a better fit if:

  • The web app and the native app are to be offered in parallel,
  • native push notifications are important for communication,
  • a standalone white-label app is required in the App Store,
  • roles, target groups, content and modules are to be configured in a differentiated manner,
  • Registration and check-in are integrated into the participant experience in a modular way,
  • APIs or project-specific system integrations are required,
  • if you would like personalised service, workshops or a dedicated contact person.

For event projects, Polario offers a web app starting at 2,500 euros per event, a ‘Hub’ package comprising a web app and a native app starting at 3,000 euros per event, and a bespoke app available on request. The current price and service overview and the individual quotation shall prevail.

Web app or native event app: which is better for attendees?

A web app is opened via a browser. It avoids the need to download from an app store and is ideal for one-off events, open target audiences and quick access via a link or QR code. Both LineUpr and Polario offer browser-based access.

A native event app is installed from an app store. It remains visible as an app icon and can send native push notifications. Polario offers this option via the Hub and Custom versions. Whether the additional download is justified depends on the duration of use, communication requirements and brand image.

A web app is not automatically inferior, nor is a native app automatically superior. For a one-day event with a fixed programme, browser-based access may be sufficient. For a recurring conference series involving time-sensitive news, community building or a standalone brand presence, the native version may offer greater benefits.

What is the difference between branding and white label?

According to the features and pricing page, LineUpr allows for a custom colour scheme, images, customisable labels and a bespoke home screen icon. The footer image can be replaced depending on the package, and a white-label domain can be purchased as an add-on. As the application remains web-based, it does not require a separate listing on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Polario distinguishes between branding within a web or hub app and a fully white-labelled custom app. With the custom option, the app name, icon and store description appear under your own branding. This requires separate developer accounts, and the app store approval processes must be included in the project plan.

The key question is therefore: Does the event simply need to be presented in a way that is consistent with the brand within the app, or should the download from the App Store already be carried out entirely under the brand’s own name?

Further reading: Would you like to understand the differences between web apps, hub apps and custom apps in more detail? The guide ‘Which type of event app suits your objectives?’ explains when browser-based access is sufficient, when a native hub app makes sense, and what requirements call for a bespoke custom app.

What is the difference between functions and processes?

There is some overlap in the visible event features. Both solutions can display information such as the programme, people, venues and sponsors, and enable interaction. A simple tick-box comparison therefore falls short.

Four procedural questions are more important:

  • 1. Access: Is a browser link sufficient, or are native apps required?
  • 2. Participant data: How are registrations, profiles and permissions imported into the app?
  • 3. Operations: Does the event team handle everything themselves, or are planning, set-up and on-site support required?
  • 4. System architecture: Are imports and analytics connections sufficient, or are API-based integrations required?

Polario positions registration and check-in as modular components that can be combined. When it comes to invitations, registration and check-in, LineUpr refers users to InviteDesk and offers functions such as programme registration or customised participant fields, depending on the package or add-on selected. To ensure a fair comparison, the entire process – from invitation to follow-up – should be documented.

Hosting and data protection: Is there a clear distinction?

As regards the general location of data, the published product pages do not reveal a clear-cut contrast: Polario states that it hosts in Germany, whilst LineUpr states that its servers are in Germany. Statements such as ‘only one of the providers hosts in Germany’ would therefore be factually incorrect.

This country specification is not sufficient for procurement purposes anyway. Please check the following with both suppliers:

  • what types of data and data flows are generated,
  • which hosting providers and subcontractors are used,
  • where primary data, backups and support access are processed,
  • what technical and organisational measures are in place,
  • how matters such as roles, deletion, export and the end of the contract are regulated,
  • what evidence and contractual commitments apply to the specific project.

Polario brings together further details on its compliance page. In the case of LineUpr, the features page, privacy policy, data processing agreement and individual quote should be assessed together. This section does not constitute legal advice.

How much do Polario and LineUpr cost?

The pricing models are only directly comparable to a limited extent.

Polario is currently publishing three entry points:

  • Event App Web from 2,500 euros per event,
  • Event App Hub from 3,000 euros per event,
  • Custom event app available on request.

LineUpr calculates the cost of the Plus, Premium and Platinum packages based on the number of events and participants. Organisers can choose between one-off event upgrades or a Flex annual subscription. According to LineUpr, one-off event upgrades are 20 per cent more expensive than the corresponding event costs under the Flex subscription; with the Flex subscription, LineUpr quotes savings of up to 60 per cent compared with individual upgrades. An optional event app creation service is quoted from 999 euros per event. The specific package fee is calculated dynamically in the price calculator and should be checked directly at the time of publication.

To ensure a reliable comparison of costs, the same services must be compared:

  • Participant and event quotas,
  • required feature packs and add-ons,
  • Branding and domain,
  • Set-up and content migration,
  • Registration, check-in and integrations,
  • Training, support and on-site services,
  • internal editorial and administrative workload,
  • Duration, extension and organisation of further events.

A lower package price may be offset by the need to do more work yourself. Conversely, a higher project price is not automatically more cost-effective if the services or integrations required are charged for separately. The decisive factor is the total cost of ownership for the same usage scenario.

Seven questions for a demonstration and to compare quotes

  • 1. How do participants access the app, and is downloading it acceptable?
  • 2. Which features are included in the package on offer, and which ones incur an additional charge?
  • 3. How are participant data, roles and access rights managed?
  • 4. What specific integrations, imports and exports are required?
  • 5. Which tasks are carried out by our own team and which by the service provider?
  • 6. Where are data and backups processed, and what evidence is available?
  • 7. What are the total costs across all planned events and the entire duration?

Use the same example scenario and the same tasks for both demos. Demonstrate, for example, a change to the agenda, a message tailored to a specific target group, a data import and an export within the system. This will allow you to compare actual workflows rather than differently staged product presentations.

Conclusion: It is not the more extensive range of functions that matters

LineUpr and Polario overlap in terms of many visible event features, but differ significantly in their deployment and operating models. LineUpr takes a browser-based, self-service approach, offering packages for single or multiple events. Polario combines a web app, a native hub app and bespoke custom apps with modular process components and project-specific services.

LineUpr is therefore not necessarily the smaller solution, nor is Polario necessarily the better one. The right choice depends on accessibility, branding, event portfolio, integrations, in-house capabilities and TCO. By prioritising these criteria before the demo, you can assess both offerings in a transparent and fair manner.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

LineUpr describes its product as a web-based event app that can be opened in a browser via a URL and does not require downloading from an app store. On a smartphone, an icon can be added to the home screen.

Yes. Polario offers a web-based app designed purely for events. The Hub and Custom versions also combine web access with a native app.

Polario offers native push notifications for its native models. LineUpr currently includes push notifications in its Platinum package. The format, technical requirements and deliverability should be specifically checked during the demo.

Both providers state on their product pages that their data is hosted in Germany or that their servers are located there. When procuring such services, subcontractors, backups, support access and contractual evidence should also be checked.

It is not possible to give a reliable answer without knowing the exact scenario. LineUpr offers packages for individual events or annual quotas, depending on the features and number of participants. Polario publishes entry-level prices for Web and Hub, and calculates custom packages on a case-by-case basis. Add-ons, set-up, integrations, support and internal overheads should all be included in the comparison.

Polario Custom is designed to be available as a standalone app in the App Store, with its own name and icon. LineUpr deliberately opts for browser-based distribution without the need for installation from the App Store.
